Swimming Lessons Are Back! Why the Pool Is One of Our Favourite Family Activities
Share
The days are finally starting to warm up in Australia, and for our family, that means more time around the water. ☀️💦
Swimming lessons have always been one of my favourite activities for the kids — not only because they love them, but because swimming is such an important part of growing up in Australia.
We are incredibly lucky to live in a country surrounded by beautiful beaches, with pools, lakes, water playgrounds and coastal destinations forming such a big part of our lifestyle.
From weekends at the beach to summer holidays by the pool, so many of our family memories in Australia happen around water.
And that’s one of the reasons I believe learning to swim from an early age is such a valuable skill.
More Than Just a Swimming Lesson
What I love most about swimming lessons is that they are about so much more than learning how to swim.
When children are little, swimming lessons can be a beautiful opportunity for parents to get into the water with them, hold them, encourage them and celebrate every little milestone.
As they grow, you start watching them become more independent and confident in the water.
Swimming also helps children develop strength, coordination, breathing techniques and core control — all while doing something that feels fun.
And unlike many childhood activities, swimming is something they can enjoy throughout their entire lives.
They can swim for exercise, spend a day at the beach with friends, jump into a pool on holidays, snorkel, surf or simply feel more comfortable and confident around water.
Swimming Is Part of the Australian Lifestyle
One of the things I love about living in Australia is how accessible swimming can be for families.
Even during the cooler months, many public and aquatic centres offer swimming lessons for children, including programs starting from babies.
And once spring arrives and those beautiful warmer days begin again, going to the pool becomes one of our favourite family outings.
Sydney in particular has some incredible public pools and aquatic centres with facilities for the whole family.

What’s in Our Kids’ Swimming Bag?
After plenty of swimming lessons with little ones, I’ve learnt that having the right things packed makes getting in and out of the pool much easier!
Here are some of our swimming-bag essentials:
🏊 A fun swimming cap
A colourful swimming cap makes swimming lessons a little more exciting for kids. Our Tolu Australia Kids Swimming Caps come in playful designs including Mermaid, Unicorn and Dolphin — because practical things can still be fun!
🩳 Tolu Kids Boardshorts
Of course, you need swimmers!
Our Tolu Kids Boardshorts are one of our swimming-bag essentials. They’re colourful, comfortable and quick-drying — perfect for swimming lessons, but also for heading straight from the pool to the playground, beach or wherever the day takes us.
And because many of our prints also come in matching Dad sizes, they’re perfect for those fun father-and-son matching moments at the pool or beach.
🧼 A change of clothes + toiletries
I always pack a fresh change of clothes, a comb and some shampoo and soap, although many aquatic centres already provide basic shower amenities.
🧖 A kids hooded beach towel
This is probably one of my favourite swimming essentials.
Our Tolu Kids Hooded Beach Towels make getting changed after lessons so much easier. Pop the hood over their head, wrap them up and they can start drying off while you organise everything else.
They are especially handy with little kids who rarely want to stand still after getting out of the water!
🌊 A lightweight Turkish towel
I also love packing a thin Tolu Turkish Towel. They’re lightweight, quick-drying and don’t take up much room in the swimming bag — especially helpful when you’re packing for more than one child.
💧 Tolu Australia Insulated Kids Water Bottle
Swimming lessons are thirsty work! I always pack a Tolu Australia insulated kids water bottle so the kids have fresh, cold water ready for them after their lesson.
The insulated design helps keep water cold for hours, and best of all, it doesn’t leak — essential when it’s being tossed into a swimming bag with towels and dry clothes!
They’re also designed with busy families in mind: they fit most pram cup holders, are easy to clean, and have a wide enough opening for ice cubes to fit easily inside — perfect for those warmer Australian days.
With their fun, colourful kids’ designs, they’re great for swimming lessons, school, sports, beach days and everyday family adventures.
🥽 Zoggs Swimming Goggles
A good pair of Zoggs swimming goggles is another essential in our swimming bag. They help kids feel more comfortable putting their face underwater, practise their swimming and breathing techniques, and build confidence in the pool.
I love having a pair ready in the bag for every lesson — especially as the kids progress and spend more time swimming underwater.
🩴 Crocs or easy slip-on shoes
Something they can put on themselves and that doesn’t matter if it gets wet.
And perhaps the most important thing of all…
🍓 SNACKS!
Because somehow swimming turns children into the hungriest little people on earth. 😂
A great option for packing snacks is the Spixal Roundie Bento Lunch Box. Its removable compartments are especially handy for kids who don’t like their foods touching, and the dividers can be removed to turn it into a lunch bowl.
Designed by two Aussie mums, it’s a fun and practical option for packing fruit, crackers, veggies, sandwiches and all those little post-swimming snacks kids suddenly desperately need!

A Skill They Can Carry for Life
For me, swimming lessons are one of those extracurricular activities that feel especially worthwhile.
They’re exercise. They’re family time. They’re confidence building. They’re preparation for the Australian lifestyle.
And most importantly, swimming is a skill our children can carry with them long after the swimming lessons finish.
Now that the days are warming up again, it’s time to find the swimming caps, pack the towels, fill the snack box and head back to the pool.
Summer is coming, and we can’t wait for all the splashes ahead. ☀️💦
