This summer, we’re excited to introduce our new collection, Sea Riders, made from sustainable fabrics that are not only eco-friendly but also produced locally in Colombia. Our commitment to sustainability has driven us to create boardshorts using fabrics made from recycled PET plastic bottles, reflecting our dedication to reducing environmental impact while maintaining high-quality products.
The Journey to Sustainable Fabrics in Colombia
Just a few years ago, finding recycled plastic fabrics was a challenge. Thanks to Lafayette’s significant investment in sustainable technology, we can now incorporate eco-conscious materials into our designs. As one of Colombia’s largest fabric manufacturers, Lafayette has been a pioneer in this movement. The company invested $1.1 million in advanced technology to produce sustainable fabrics, allowing us to locally source recycled plastic bottles and turn them into high-quality textiles.
How PET Plastic Bottles Become Fabric
The process of turning PET plastic bottles into fabric is both fascinating and eco-friendly:
1. Collection: Recycled PET plastic bottles are collected.
2. Classification & Crushing: The bottles are sorted, crushed into small particles, and washed.
3. Melting & Granulation: The particles are melted, granulated, and spun into yarns.
4. Fabric Production: The yarns are woven into durable, lightweight fabrics ideal for boardshorts.
Each pair of boardshorts in the *Sea Riders* collection is made from approximately 15 recycled PET plastic bottles.
Certified Eco-Friendly Fabrics
Our commitment to sustainability extends to ensuring that all fabrics we use meet the highest environmental and safety standards. Our fabrics are Oeko-Tex® Standard 100 certified, meaning they have been tested for harmful substances and are safe for sensitive skin. Additionally, we have the Global Recycled Standard (GRS) certification by Ecocert Greenlife, guaranteeing that our fabrics are made from recycled materials and produced under strict environmental and social criteria.
Why Choose Recycled Plastic
Using fabrics made from recycled plastic bottles not only helps reduce waste in landfills but also offers functional benefits. Our boardshorts are:
- Lightweight and breathable: Perfect for all weather conditions.
- Soft and comfortable: The fabric feels great against the skin.
- Durable: Designed for long-lasting wear without compromising on style.
