The Most Funny Things I Did as a First-Time Mum - A Celebration of Mother's Day!

Motherhood is beautiful, emotional… and sometimes hilarious when you look back at it.

As a first-time mum, you try everything. Every tip, every trick, every piece of advice someone gives you — especially when it comes to sleep!

Four years later, I look back at some of the things we did with our first baby and I can’t help but laugh.

 

1. The Chamomile Tea Bath Trick

 

Someone once told my husband and I that if we put a bag of chamomile tea in our son’s bath before bedtime, he would sleep better.

We were desperate for sleep… so of course we tried it.

We carefully placed the chamomile tea bag in the bath like it was some magical potion.

Fast forward four years… and he still wakes up sometimes 🤣

 

2. The Road Trip Packing Disaster

 

On our first family road trip we packed the IKEA high chair completely disassembled and even the Boori cot mattress.

Our tiny car looked like a removalist truck.

Now I know that when travelling with kids you don’t need to bring half the house.

Simple solutions are best.

 

3. The Most Expensive Nap in Positano

 

One afternoon in Positano our baby refused to nap.

So we hired a taxi so he could fall asleep with the motion of the car.

The driver kept explaining we didn’t need a taxi to go anywhere.

And we kept explaining… we didn’t actually need to go anywhere.

We just needed the baby to sleep.

Ten minutes later he was asleep.

Cost of the nap? €50.

Worth it? At the time… absolutely.

What Motherhood Eventually Teaches You

 

With time, you realise a few things:

• A bag of tea won’t fix sleep training.

• There are amazing services like Tresillian that can really help.

• And sometimes… it’s okay if the baby skips a nap.

Motherhood also teaches you something else:

The best moments are often the simplest ones.

A spontaneous beach afternoon.

A family trip.

Watching your kids run on the sand.
